Lesson 36: The ‘secret’ prayers of the priest before Communion

What follows is one of the those hidden treasures of the Mass that very few people know about. It’s the private preparation of the priest for Communion, but if you have a Daily Roman Missal or any worship resource with the prayers, readings, and rubrics of the Mass, you can follow along too. It is one of my all-time favorite prayers. Here it is in English:

“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, who, by the will of the Father and the work of the Holy Spirit, through your Death gave life to the world, free me by this, your most holy Body and Blood, from all my sins and from every evil; keep me always faithful to your commandments, and never let me be parted from you.”

That’s what it’s all about it, isn’t it? Never to be parted from Jesus. What a great prayer! What a perfect desire! But only by God’s grace can we always remain united to Christ.

And if, by weakness or foolishness, we were to commit a mortal sin separating us from Christ, we can always repent, go to Confession, and be reunited with Jesus and begin again. Yes, there is redemption. Yes, there are second chances.
